Edmundo was working as a warehouse manager when he realized he wasn’t feeling fulfilled – he was just working to pay the bills.
His moment of clarity came when he read Mastery by Robert Greene, which discussed finding our life’s purpose.
“I thought about how I’ve always been into health and fitness since I was a child,” Edmundo reflects.
Originally from Managua, Nicaragua, Edmundo immigrated to Canada when he was young.
“I grew up in the aftermath of a civil war, so the fighting spirit was always there.”
His mother enrolled him in martial arts classes, instilling in him discipline and self-awareness. Eight years ago, he started practicing martial arts professionally.
But fitness wasn’t the only thing that drew him to personal training. “What drew me in is helping others – that was always on the forefront of my mind.”
He researched different personal trainer courses, but they were shorter than he wanted.
“When I saw that MaKami offered a year-long personal trainer program, it fell in line with what I wanted, which was more flexibility and the ability to immerse myself in the program.”
During his time at MaKami, Edmundo found plenty of support.
“What stood out to me was the openness and willingness to help. They don’t shut you down.”
Edmundo was eager to utilize available resources so he could succeed in the program and in his career.
“There was a lot of support, whether it was tutoring services, career fairs or campus events to keep up morale. If I asked a staff member a question and they didn’t know the answer, they got back to me in a timely manner. The communication was great.”
Edmundo knew he had made the right choice in joining MaKami’s personal training program.
“I had dreams about the class, and I had dreams about training.”
The opportunity to learn from different instructors was a great experience.
“Not only did I get to experience how one professor teaches, but I also discovered other professors’ point of the view and the way they think about fitness. The diversity of ideas helped me form my own,” he says.
Edmundo adds that one important lesson he learned during the program was the difference in everyone’s fitness journey.
“Not everybody’s training to be a bodybuilder. Some people just want to be able to get off their chairs, and the instructors at MaKami did a great job of teaching you all about that. The personal trainer course gives you a solid foundation of what to expect in the fitness industry.”
The support MaKami gave him helped him after graduation when he was looking for a job.
“It helped me feel confident walking into the gyms and applying for positions. I knew that I was going to face difficulties, but barricades – I run right through them.”
The future is looking bright for Edmundo. At the time of the interview, he was starting a new job in his dream career.
“Now I feel a sense of purpose and accomplishment when I get to help others,” he says. “If you wake up knowing you’ve got class and you get nervous, keep moving forward because that means you care. That means you will succeed.”
