Every January, gyms are packed with people eager to start fresh on their fitness goals. But the real challenge isn’t starting, it’s staying consistent throughout the year. If you’ve ever wondered how to keep that momentum going, you’re not alone! Noel Fitzgibbon, Department Head for the Personal Training Certificate at MaKami College, shared some practical tips to help you build sustainable habits and stay motivated.
Start Slow and Stay Consistent
One of the biggest mistakes people make is going “all in” too quickly. Noel advises against jumping into six workouts a week right from the start. Instead, aim for two to three sessions per week and focus on consistency. Remember: Two workouts a week for a year beats six workouts a week for a month.
Find What Works for Your Schedule
There’s no magic number for how often you should exercise. The best routine is the one you can realistically fit into your life – whether that’s once a week or five times a week. Building a habit means making it sustainable.
Keep Motivation High
Momentum can fade after the initial excitement. To keep going:
- Choose exercises you enjoy. Don’t force yourself into routines you hate.
- Find a workout buddy for accountability and encouragement.
- Consider hiring a personal trainer for guidance and injury prevention.
Accountability Matters
Working with a trainer or having a friend to check in with can make a huge difference. Accountability helps you stay on track and avoid burnout.
