As artificial intelligence and automation continue to transform industries, many professionals are questioning which careers will remain secure in the years ahead. According to Adam Salzman, SALT/SSC Manager at MaKami College, the answer lies in roles that prioritize human interaction and care – areas where technology cannot replace the human element.
“AI is growing at an amazing rate,” Salzman explained. “But there are certain careers where you simply can’t replace the human factor. That’s why MaKami focuses on programs that will be there for the long term.”
Programs Designed for Workforce Longevity
MaKami currently offers 10 career-focused programs, including Massage Therapy, Health Care Aide, Early Learning and Child Care, Personal Trainer, Applied Politics and Public Affairs, Business Administrative Assistant, Medical Office Assistant and more. Program lengths range from eight to 18 months, allowing students to enter the workforce quickly while gaining practical, career-ready skills.
Comprehensive Support Services
Beyond technical training, MaKami provides extensive wraparound support to help students succeed academically and personally. These services include tutoring, counseling, learning and social strategists, and exam preparation assistance.
“We want every student to feel like they have an opportunity to succeed here,” Salzman said. “Our goal is to empower students so they leave feeling ready to take on their future careers.”
Language Learning for Workforce Integration
Recognizing the needs of Alberta’s diverse population, MaKami has introduced an English Language Learning program to support newcomers and individuals seeking to improve their language skills. “Many of these students are skilled workers – they just need that language component,” Salzman noted. “This program helps them enter the workforce or pursue further education with confidence.”
Community Engagement and Public College Status
MaKami also serves as a community hub, hosting events such as the upcoming Community Holiday Party on December 13 from 1-4 PM, where attendees can learn more about programs and connect with faculty and students while enjoying food, drinks and prize giveaways.
Salzman highlighted another significant development: MaKami’s transition to not-for-profit status as a public college. “This movement helps us support our students even more,” he said.
