Maria – Finding Success with Massage Therapy

Maria, massage therapy school graduate at MaKami College owns NugaBest Canada clinic

Maria has worn many hats throughout her life – teacher, salesperson and day home worker to name a few. But she says none have been as personally and professionally fulfilling as her current career as a massage therapist.

Originally from Colombia, Maria came to Canada as a young adult in 2006. Shortly after moving here, she met her husband and together they began the journey of health and wellness.

“My husband and I went through a series of constant pains for many years,” says Maria. “We tried many treatments and I travelled the world to find solutions to our health issues.”

One of the therapies they found most effective was massage therapy. “When I met my husband he was using massage therapy to help treat his pain,” she says. “After that I thought I wouldn’t mind working as a massage therapist, so I started to look for a massage school., and I found MaKami College.”

Maria graduated from the Calgary SW campus in 2020 and opened her successful home-based clinic, NugaBest Canada.

She attributes the success of her business to the training she received at MaKami. “MaKami prepared me by providing me with the knowledge, confidence and skills for my business,” she says. “They literally taught me massage therapy and the anatomy of the human body. They gave me the best tools to achieve my goal and become a registered massage therapist.”

Maria says the most important thing to her about working as a massage therapist is how she can help her clients. “My passion is to help patients recover and live a healthy life. I have helped patients with many health conditions, like relieve headaches, back, neck and chest pain and much more.”

Maria says she enjoys the independence and financial freedom her new career as a massage therapist has provided for her and is proud of how far she has come.

“I realized my dream and achieved a sense of completion in my career. It really developed me as a person, doing what I love, and aside from the hard work and dedication I had to put in, it was really a fun time. I got to meet new people, and join a community of people who are passionate about the same thing I am.”

Maria is very grateful to MaKami for helping change her life. “MaKami played a pivotal role in my life. Getting my massage therapy certificate from MaKami really helped me and my clinic.”

She has some words of advice to any massage therapist students who are still in school.

“You can do it. As long as you stay ambitious, dedicated and put in the effort and keep going, you will persevere.”
