If you’re considering a career change in 2023, you might want to think about becoming a massage therapist. At MaKami College, we’re seeing growing numbers of men training as massage therapists in our 3,000 hour Licensed Massage Therapy program. We often get asked about whether this course is suitable for men, so we’ve answered some of your frequently asked questions in this article.

What are the requirements to become a massage therapist?

To study massage therapy at MaKami College you must reach a minimum level of education and English competency. If you’re not sure if your education meets the minimal requirements, please check with our Student Advisors or take our pre-approval survey online.

If you’re an international student, you’ll need a study permit.

Our massage therapy courses start every 2 months, so you can start preparing for your studies now!

Do male massage therapists make good money?

The average hourly wage of a massage therapist in Alberta is between $50 – $80. Based on our former students, there’s no real discrepancy between male massage therapists and female massage therapists in terms of their hourly wage.

What percentage of massage therapists are male?

Around 20% of massage therapists are male and this percentage is growing! Of MaKami’s 2022 Licensed Massage Therapy students, just under 40% were males! One of the real advantages of a career in massage therapy is the flexibility it offers in career paths. Massage therapy doesn’t limit you to working at spas – many of our graduates have gone on to work with professional sports teams and offer sports therapy, or to work in hospitals and clinics offering physical rehabilitation services. We’ve also seen other health practitioners come in to get their massage therapy training to complement their existing skill sets.

If you have an entrepreneurial mindset you can choose to run your own business and take on your own clients, having even more control over your hours and your income.

Samuel, a graduate of MaKami College says: “Now that I have my own business I can control my time, when to work and flexibility. To me that’s priority number 1. Life is short, there should be balance. You can work and at the same time enjoy life.” Read more about Samuel’s experience to give you inspiration about your career potential with massage therapy training.

Where can I get massage therapy training?

We offer massage therapy courses at our MaKami Calgary and MaKami Edmonton locations.

The Advanced Massage Therapy course is a two-year program that gives you over 3,000 hours of hands-on training and experience.
