MaKami College and Bonnie Doon Centre are excited to announce a new community mural that will showcase the local culture of the Bonnie Doon community and bring a smile to many faces.
“This is a project I’m very passionate about,” says Theodora Harasymiw, a well-known mosaic artist and trained painter in Edmonton. “The Bonnie Doon community is vibrant and full of energy, and I’m so grateful to be able to bring that inside Bonnie Doon Centre for everyone to enjoy.”
The mural, expected to be completed by the end of March, is a partnership between MaKami College and Bonnie Doon Centre.
“We are having community members and students from MaKami College come and help paint the mural,” says Harasymiw. “This way the piece is truly made from people in the community, and they can come and look at it for years to come.”
“Art has the power to bridge divides, spark imagination, and cultivate understanding,” says Marija Pavkovic-Tovissi, President & CEO of MaKami College. “Our students are excited to participate in this project because weaving creativity into the fabric of education and community is a visual representation of one of our core values. At MaKami we not only nurture individual growth, but also build a collective strength that transforms our shared future and being able to showcase that through artwork is a dream come true.”
Leah Day, Marketing Manager for Bonnie Doon Centre, says the mural is a perfect fit for the mall, which holds a number of artist retailers in the mall hosts over 140 artists and 3,000 artworks available for viewing and purchase during the annual Night of Artist Artwalk coming up March 14-16. “Community and art are such pillars of Bonnie Doon Centre and the community at large, so we are excited to showcase this once it’s complete.”
