About Foundational Learning Assistance
Foundational Learning Assistance (FLA) is a student financial assistance program that is designed to support Albertans who are seeking to improve their education and skills. This program offers financial assistance to students who want to enroll in MaKami College’s English Language Learning (ELL) program.
Eligibility and Admissions
The following applicants are eligible for FLA funding:
- Students who are planning to enroll in MaKami College’s English Language Learning (ELL) program.
- Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents, Protected Persons according to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
- Students who are 18 years or older by the start of the ELL program.
- Students who have an Alberta address.

How to Apply
In order to apply for FLA funding, you must complete the following:
- Enroll and get accepted in MaKami College’s English Language Learning (ELL) program.
- Have the following documents ready:
- Confirmation of enrollment
- Verified Alberta.ca account (You must have an account to access the online application form)
- Alberta Student Number (Look up or request your number)
- Social Insurance Number
- Direct deposit information
- Schedule an appointment with MaKami’s Student Advisory Services to go over the FLA application process
After Applying
After submitting your application, you must wait for a notice of decision informing you about the status of your application that will be sent to you via email. This includes information about:
- the amount of money you will get or the reason(s) you will not get funding.
- when you will receive funding.
- your right to request a review of the decision.
