Medical Office Assistant Program Overview

The Medical Office Assistant Diploma Program is designed to be completed in 10 months, or 900 hours. That means you could be working in a medical administration job in under a year!

MaKami’s 10-month blended program is offered in a case study format, which means from the moment you enroll, you will be placed as a medical assistant within a mock healthcare setting. You’ll have imaginary managers, coworkers, tasks and assignments that will prepare you for today’s medical office environment. For more details see our Medical Office Assistant curriculum.

Yes it is! MaKami is licensed by the Government of Alberta and listed on the Government of Canada’s list of Designated Learning Institutions. We are also in good standing with NHP CanadaCRMTA, and the Canadian Sports Massage Therapists Association.

The Medical Office Assistant program is offered in a blended format, with theory components offered online and in-class courses to provide you with the practical, hands-on training you will need to be successful in the workplace.

Eligibility and Admissions

What Are the Admissions Requirements to be eligible for the Medical Office Assistant Program?

Students under the standard admission for the Medical Office Assistant program must meet the following criteria:

  1. Alberta high school diploma, verified by transcript, or non-Alberta equivalent,
    OR
    Successful completion of the General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.)
  2. Successful interview with school administration, at the discretion of the school.
  3. Must be minimum 17 years of age.

Programs using Mature Admissions for the Medical Office Assistant program must meet the following criteria:

  1. Must be 18 years or older.
  2. Successful interview with school administration, at the discretion of the school.
  3. Successful completion of a Wonderlic Exam OR completion of a post-secondary program in Canada

As English is the language of instruction in all programs at MaKami College, we require all applicants to demonstrate communicative proficiency in the English language prior to admission acceptance. For the Medical Office Assistant Program, this could include one of the following:

Completion of previous education with either a High School or Post-Secondary Diploma in an institution where English is the primary language of instruction and communication

Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) Literacy Placement Test with a score of 6 or equivalent in each of the four competencies: reading/writing/listening/speaking

Completion of English 20-1 or equivalent with at least 60%, or English 20-2 or equivalent with at least a 65% passing grade. If the credentials are from outside Canada, the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) will be used to assess the equivalencies of the courses submitted.
